Here’s what you need to know about the National Health Service (NHS):
What is it?
- A healthcare service provided for all UK residents by the UK government
Is it compulsory?
- Yes, it is compulsory for all international students
How much does it cost?
- The cover costs GBP75 for every 6 months of your study duration
What am I entitled for?
- You are entitled to free GP consultation and hospital treatment
What does my treatment include?
- Free treatment should there be emergencies at walk-in clinics & emergency rooms
- Minor injuries treatment in clinics and walk-in units
- Treatment with a Specialist or Consultant if referred by GP
- Contraception and sexual health services
- Maternity services
As NHS only covers basic health coverage, it is highly recommended to also purchase your own private healthcare insurance to cover the following.
- Cost of medicine, drugs and specialist treatments (sports, dental, optician etc.)
- Private hospitals and clinics which are not covered by NHS and possibly faster treatment
- Cost of non-emergency dental treatment, eye tests/glasses/contact lenses, and vaccinations not covered by NHS
