CONSERVATION GENOMICS AND DISEASE SURVEILLANCE FOR AUSTRALIAN NATIVE SPECIES CONSERVATION PHD TOP UP SCHOLARSHIPA$10,000Australia has a poor record for native species conservation. In an effort to ‘future-proof’ our native species, this project will utilise close relationships with local wildlife hospitals to establish genomic resources for key animal taxa that are of conservation concern and also to gain insight into their range of pathogens and parasites that may pose the threat of disease to animal and/or human health.

MOLECULAR GENETICS OF INTELLECTUAL DISABILITYSynapses releasing the neurotransmitters GABA, glycine and glutamate play essential roles in health and disease, with defects resulting in diseases such as autism, idiopathic generalised epilepsies, intellectual disability and startle disease. UNDERSTANDING THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF EQUINE CHLAMYDIOSIS PHD SCHOLARSHIPEquine chlamydiosis, caused by the avian pathogen Chlamydia psittaci, is an emerging cause of pregnancy loss affecting Australia’s Thoroughbred industry. C. psittaci also poses a risk to veterinarians with several zoonotic outbreaks documented. Molecular data suggests that infection in horses is the result of infectious disease spill-over from native Australian birds, however, when and how this transmission occurs is unknown. This project will undertake field surveillance of chlamydial infections on Thoroughbred studs with a history of equine chlamydiosis. Laboratory analysis will then establish the C. psittaci infection pattern in horses and identify the avian reservoirs and transmission risks
