About the course
The Master of Urban Design develops professionals who understand cities as complex systems shaped by both spatial and temporal forces, and who can design responses to contemporary challenges such as mass urbanisation and climate change. The course distinguishes urban design from architecture by focusing on the relationships between buildings, streetscapes, landscapes and municipal services to create cohesive public environments. Students work in interdisciplinary teams to build collaboration skills and industry readiness for urban design practice.
What you might learn
Students learn to analyse urban environments as interconnected systems and translate that understanding into design strategies for contemporary urban challenges. The course builds capability in designing at the scale of precincts and public realms—integrating built form, landscape and services to create harmonious outcomes. Through interdisciplinary teamwork, students develop collaborative, practice-oriented skills aligned with professional urban design work.
Career outcome
Graduates are prepared for roles that shape cities and public environments through precinct and public-realm design across government, consultancy and development contexts. Career pathways can include urban designer roles working on streetscapes, civic spaces, regeneration projects and integrated urban design frameworks. The interdisciplinary emphasis supports work alongside architects, landscape architects and planners on complex urban projects.
