About the course

This two-year full-time advanced masters combines 50% coursework and 50% research in astronomy and astrophysics. Students can tailor coursework across areas such as cosmology, galaxies, stellar astrophysics, planetary science, computing and observational techniques. Many subjects include hands-on or research-led components, including analysing telescope data, building theoretical models, or developing and testing astronomical instrumentation, alongside transferable skills valued beyond academia.

What you might learn

You will build advanced capability in modern astronomy and astrophysics through a blend of specialised coursework and substantial supervised research training. Learning emphasises astrophysical methods, scientific computing, data acquisition and analysis, and the development and evaluation of models or instrumentation. The program also develops broader professional skills such as problem solving, project planning and communication, supporting pathways in research and data-intensive science roles.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research pathways in astronomy and astrophysics, including roles in universities, observatories and research agencies. The strong quantitative, computational and data-analysis training also supports careers beyond academia in areas such as scientific software and high-performance computing, data science and analytics, instrumentation and engineering support for space and optical technologies, and technical roles in government or industry that value advanced modelling and problem-solving.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on meeting ANU postgraduate admission requirements for this advanced program. The degree involves both coursework and a substantial research component, so applicants should have suitable prior tertiary study in relevant disciplines (such as astronomy, astrophysics, physics or closely related fields). Progression to the major research component requires strong academic performance in early coursework and approval from an identified supervisor.
