About the course

Statistics helps you understand the world by analysing data and modelling uncertainty. This degree responds to rapidly growing data volumes and the increasing need for quantitative expertise across science, health, economics, technology and government. You’ll build strong statistical reasoning and data analysis capability, learning to extract insight from complex information and support evidence-based decisions in a wide range of real-world contexts.

What you might learn

You will develop core skills in statistical methods, stochastic processes, regression and mathematical statistics, supported by foundations in mathematics and computing. The program builds capability to design and analyse studies, model uncertainty, and interpret results clearly. Through electives and a choice of major pathways, you can tailor learning toward applied analysis, theory, probability, or data analytics relevant to modern data-driven work.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue roles applying statistical thinking and data analysis across many sectors. Typical pathways include statistician, data analyst, quantitative researcher, risk or forecasting analyst, biostatistics or health analytics roles, and analytics positions in government, finance, technology, and consulting. The training also provides a strong base for postgraduate study and research in statistics, data science, or related quantitative fields.

Entry requirements

Applicants are assessed under ANU undergraduate admission requirements. The indicative selection ranks listed are ATAR 80 (or equivalent) and International Baccalaureate 30. Applicants may also need to meet any program prerequisites and eligibility rules that apply to their pathway (domestic or international). Additional adjustment factors may be available depending on individual circumstances and subject background.
