About the course
The Master of Philosophy (Geophysics) is a higher degree by research that develops advanced expertise beyond honours or postgraduate diploma level through a substantial supervised thesis. Most of the program is dedicated to independent research, with limited coursework where required, and is designed to prepare you for potential progression to a PhD. This is a master by research in geophysics within the sciences. The programme advances scientific inquiry through supervised laboratory or field research, data analysis, and thesis-based discovery.
What you might learn
Develop advanced theoretical knowledge and critically reflect on its application. Build capability to investigate and synthesise complex concepts, generate and evaluate ideas, and design and apply appropriate research methods. Learn to communicate a sustained research argument and disseminate results, producing original research that contributes to knowledge and/or professional practice in geophysics.
Career outcome
Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles in geoscience and related sectors, supporting advanced investigation and interpretation of subsurface and Earth-system data. Career pathways may include research assistant/associate roles, geophysicist positions in resources and energy, government geological agencies, environmental and geotechnical consultancies, or progression to PhD study and academia. This is a master by research pathway in geophysics within the sciences. Preparing graduates for scientific research, R&D leadership, and doctoral study in the sciences.
