About the course

This part-time, online Specialist Certificate equips nurses with evidence-based knowledge and best-practice guidelines to provide high quality care for critically ill paediatric patients and their families. The 25 credit point program is delivered over two terms and comprises two core online subjects: Applied Pathophysiology and Foundations in Paediatric Critical Care. Students develop capability in assessment and evaluation across the continuum of care, focusing on common presentations, interventions, and nursing management strategies in paediatric critical care.

What you might learn

Students will develop scientific and clinical reasoning skills to assess, interpret and respond to deterioration and complex presentations in critically ill children. The course builds foundational specialist knowledge in paediatric critical care nursing, including appropriate treatment considerations and nursing management planning. Graduates will be prepared to practise as a beginning level specialist nurse in paediatric critical care contexts and may be eligible for advanced standing into further study.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue or progress into roles providing specialist nursing care to critically ill infants and children in acute and critical care environments. This qualification supports work in paediatric intensive care and related hospital services, contributing to patient assessment, intervention planning and family-centred care. It is particularly relevant for nurses seeking to transition into paediatric critical care specialty practice or strengthen capability for advanced paediatric acute care pathways.

Entry requirements

English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.
