About the course

This cross-disciplinary, industry-oriented program explores the social and cultural dimensions of the built environment and the growing importance of urban and cultural heritage in global cities. It examines contemporary and theoretical approaches to heritage policy, including regulation and practice, digital technologies in heritage, and heritage significance across historical and cross-cultural contexts. Students build critical research and presentation skills for analysing, documenting and managing heritage sites, landscapes, and tangible and intangible cultural practices, with elective options including a research project or industry internship.

What you might learn

Students develop an advanced understanding of heritage interpretation, management and conservation in response to pressures such as rapid urbanisation and economic, social and environmental sustainability. The course builds capability to evaluate heritage policy and practice, including the use of digital approaches and consideration of heritage’s social and economic impacts such as tourism and reconstruction. Graduates strengthen applied research, documentation and communication skills relevant to professional heritage decision-making in diverse cultural contexts.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles addressing the interpretation, management and conservation of urban and cultural heritage in cities and communities. Career pathways may include work in heritage policy and regulation, heritage consulting and conservation practice, cultural heritage management for government and agencies, and advisory roles connected to planning and the built environment. Opportunities can also extend to heritage-related tourism, heritage documentation and digital heritage initiatives, and project-based work involving heritage sites, landscapes and cultural practices.
