About the course

The Master of Theatre (Dramaturgy) at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) offers Australia’s first specialist qualification in dramaturgy. You will explore dramaturgy beyond scripts, engaging with dance, hybrid works, installation, community-based and performance art. Delivered over three semesters, it combines theory and practice through workshops, seminars and performance projects. This is a master’s coursework degree in performing arts practice. The programme advances creative direction, digital production, and design thinking for professional media and innovation-led studios.

What you might learn

Students develop in-depth dramaturgical thinking and contemporary practices, building artistic leadership capabilities for diverse performance contexts. The course strengthens collaborative and interdisciplinary skills through intensive project-based learning alongside other VCA postgraduate disciplines. Graduates build practical and analytical tools to support the creation, shaping and critical development of performance works.

Career outcome

Graduates may work as dramaturgs or creative development specialists across theatre, contemporary performance, dance and interdisciplinary arts. The course supports pathways into collaboration with writers, directors, choreographers, designers and performers, contributing to new work development, rehearsal processes, festivals and production companies.
