About the course
This course offers advanced study in dramaturgy, extending beyond literary play scripts to include dance, hybrid works, installation, community-based practice and performance artwork. Delivered within the Victorian College of the Arts, it combines Melbourne’s artistic and cultural context with learning from industry professionals. The program balances theory and practice across three semesters through workshops, seminars, lectures, masterclasses and performance/independent projects.
What you might learn
Students develop in-depth dramaturgical thinking and contemporary practices, building artistic leadership capabilities for diverse performance contexts. The course strengthens collaborative and interdisciplinary skills through intensive project-based learning alongside other VCA postgraduate disciplines. Graduates build practical and analytical tools to support the creation, shaping and critical development of performance works.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue work as dramaturgs across theatre, dance and interdisciplinary performance, supporting the development of new works and productions. The collaborative training environment prepares students for roles within performing arts companies, festivals and independent practice, working with writers, directors, choreographers and performers.
