About the course

The Master of Science (Physics) at Melbourne combines advanced physics coursework with a substantial research component, allowing students to explore fundamental questions about the universe while working with leading research groups. Students learn from world-leading academics in areas such as astrophysics, theoretical particle physics and experimental particle physics, and participate in internationally significant projects. The course culminates in a major research project that strengthens graduates’ research profile and supports pathways into industry or further research.

What you might learn

Students develop deep disciplinary knowledge across key frontiers in physics while building strong research capability through an extended independent project. The course aims to strengthen practical and professional skills through complementary electives such as modelling, data-focused subjects, science communication, ethics and business tools. Graduates gain the analytical, technical and research skills needed to contribute to high-level scientific work and prepare for PhD-level study or advanced roles in industry.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-focused careers in universities, government laboratories and large international collaborations, supported by experience delivering a major research project. The program also builds transferable quantitative and data skills relevant to industry roles in areas such as analytics, technology, scientific instrumentation and R&D. Depending on specialisation and electives, pathways may include further doctoral study or professional roles across science-intensive and high-technology sectors.
