About the course

This two-year program explores the systems and processes that shape Earth, delivered within ANU’s research-intensive Earth and marine science environment. You can tailor study across areas such as geochemistry, geophysics, geobiology, biogeochemistry, ocean and climate change, planetary science, computational geoscience and analytical techniques. The degree combines advanced coursework with research methods, a proposal and presentation, and a substantial research project.

What you might learn

You will build advanced scientific capability in Earth sciences, learning to design and conduct research using experimental, analytical and computational approaches. The program develops skills in research methods, data analysis and interpretation, scientific communication, and understanding natural hazards and Earth system processes. Through a research proposal, capstone components and project work, you gain experience translating complex geoscience questions into rigorous investigations.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles across geoscience research and applied Earth science. Potential pathways include geoscientist or Earth scientist positions in government agencies, environmental and climate organisations, natural hazard and risk assessment, resources and energy, consulting, laboratories, and research institutes. The program also supports progression to further research training and careers involving scientific analysis, modelling, field-based investigation and science communication.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0. They also need at least 8 courses in a cognate discipline, with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 across those cognate courses. Admission is competitive; meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee entry. Applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements and may be ranked on GPA and English proficiency.
