About the course

This program develops advanced understanding of contemporary political affairs and equips you to analyse major political questions such as voter behaviour, conflict, and democratic change. You build a strong foundation in political science research methods and choose from a wide range of topics including terrorism and counter-terrorism, human rights, advocacy, and religion and democracy. The degree suits those planning policy, government, or international-focused careers and can support further research study.

What you might learn

You will gain practical training in political science methods and research design, strengthening your ability to evaluate evidence and produce rigorous analysis. Core study builds comparative perspectives on political institutions, behaviour, democracy, and state formation, alongside quantitative and/or qualitative methods. Electives and specialisations let you deepen expertise in regional and thematic areas and apply skills to real-world problems through selected experiential learning opportunities.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-oriented and analytical roles across government, public policy, and political risk, as well as work with international organisations, NGOs, advocacy groups, and consulting. The program supports careers involving electoral analysis, governance and democratic development, security and conflict analysis, human rights, and regional or strategic policy. It also provides a pathway for students considering further research training, including progression to PhD study.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic and English language requirements and are assessed competitively. Minimum entry is typically a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with GPA 5.0/7.0. Alternative pathways include a Bachelor with GPA 4.0/7.0 plus relevant full-time work experience, or a Graduate Certificate/Diploma or prior postgraduate study with GPA 4.0/7.0. GRE may be accepted in some cases.
