About the course

This dedicated political science degree examines how political attitudes and behaviour shape policy outcomes, and how institutions work in Australia and across the world. Studying in Australia’s capital places you close to national political institutions and public debate. The program emphasises critical analysis and practical understanding of politics, supported by opportunities such as internships that provide exposure to real policymaking settings.

What you might learn

You will build core political science knowledge alongside research and analytical capability. The program develops skills in political theory, Australian and comparative politics, and methods for analysing political behaviour and institutions. Through compulsory introductory and methods courses plus advanced electives, you learn to evaluate evidence, interpret political processes, and communicate well-reasoned arguments relevant to contemporary policy and governance challenges.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue roles where political insight and evidence-based analysis are valued. Typical pathways include public policy and program roles in government, political advisory work, and positions in think tanks, advocacy organisations, NGOs and international organisations. Skills are also relevant to political research, media and communications, stakeholder relations, and further study leading to specialist policy, international relations or public administration careers.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on meeting the published selection rank for the program. The indicative minimum is ATAR 85 (or IB 33). Applicants apply through the relevant admissions pathway (domestic or international) and may be eligible for adjustment factors depending on circumstances. Additional requirements may apply under ANU admissions policies and program rules.
