About the course

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Law is an internationally recognised masters by research degree focused on developing advanced capability in independent and sustained legal research. Students undertake a substantial original research project under academic supervision and produce a thesis that demonstrates critical application of specialist knowledge and contributes to scholarship. The thesis is externally examined by internationally recognised experts in the relevant research field.

What you might learn

This course aims to build advanced research expertise in law through the design, execution and completion of an original thesis project. Students will develop high-level skills in critical analysis, scholarly writing and the rigorous application of specialist legal knowledge to a defined research problem. The program prepares graduates to contribute independently to academic and professional legal scholarship.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue pathways in academia and legal research, including doctoral study or research-focused roles within universities and research institutes. The advanced thesis and research training can support careers in policy development and specialist legal analysis across government and non-government organisations. The degree also strengthens capability for expert advisory roles that require deep subject-matter knowledge and independent research skills.
