About the course
The Master of Music (Research) is a graduate research degree focused on developing advanced research capability in contemporary music practice and theory, alongside mastery in a chosen field of practice where relevant. Students complete a substantial original research project under academic supervision in a research environment across a prescribed candidature period. In some disciplines, candidates may submit a folio of compositions or a combined performance folio with a related written project.
What you might learn
Students develop the skills to plan, conduct and communicate an original research project in music, supported by expert supervision and a structured research environment. The course aims to deepen disciplinary knowledge in areas such as composition, performance, jazz and improvisation, psychology, therapy, or musicology/ethnomusicology. Graduates build advanced analytical, creative and scholarly capabilities to contribute to academic and professional understandings of music.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue research-focused roles in universities, conservatoria, and arts organisations, including pathways toward doctoral study. The degree supports careers in music scholarship and analysis (e.g., musicology/ethnomusicology), as well as practice-led research careers for composers and performers. Depending on the discipline, it can also support work in specialised fields such as music psychology or music therapy in research and academically oriented settings.
