About the course

The Master of Forests examines forests as vital ecosystems central to biodiversity, human wellbeing and climate solutions. You’ll explore sustainable forest management across conservation, plantations, farm and urban forests, and the policy and governance contexts that shape decisions. The degree emphasises interdisciplinary problem solving and applied learning to address deforestation, restoration and climate adaptation challenges in Australia and globally in a master’s program focused on environmental science and forestry.

What you might learn

You will build knowledge in forest science and management, combining ecological, social, economic and governance perspectives. The program develops skills in research methods, spatial and analytical tools, and professional practice to design and evaluate solutions to complex forest and landscape problems. You’ll learn to integrate evidence, work with stakeholders, and communicate findings effectively for real-world forest management challenges in a master’s-level environmental science discipline.

Career outcome

Graduates may work in forest and landscape management, conservation and restoration, environmental policy and governance, plantation and natural forest operations, or consulting roles supporting sustainability and climate initiatives. Opportunities span government agencies, Traditional Owner organisations, NGOs, research institutes and industry, with pathways into project leadership, monitoring and evaluation, and environmental planning. This prepares you for professional practice in forestry and environmental science as a master’s qualification.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0. Applicants also need sufficient prior study in a cognate discipline (at least 8 courses) and must meet ANU English language requirements. Admission is competitive, so meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer.
