About the course

The Master of Financial Economics is an interdisciplinary program combining advanced finance and economics for students aiming for analytically demanding careers. It focuses on applying core financial and economic models while also explaining their technical foundations, enabling graduates to work confidently with rigorous theory and evidence. The degree is designed to prepare students to evaluate, adapt and test models in evolving market settings.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced quantitative and analytical capability across microeconomics, econometrics, statistics and finance. The program builds competence in optimisation, modelling and empirical testing, alongside applied finance areas such as corporate finance, investments and projects. Graduates learn to understand the assumptions behind widely used models, use data-driven methods to evaluate them, and design or assess new instruments and approaches for different market environments.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles requiring strong financial and economic analysis in industry and government. Typical pathways include financial analyst, investment or portfolio analyst, risk or quantitative analyst, research analyst, policy or economic analyst, and roles in banking, funds management, consulting and financial regulation. The combination of econometrics, microeconomic theory and applied finance supports careers involving modelling, forecasting and evidence-based decision making.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0. Applicants must also meet ANU’s English language requirements and any program-specific requirements. Admission is competitive; meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee an offer. ANU may rank applicants using calculated GPAs from different periods of prior study and may consider higher English proficiency and diversity factors.
