About the course
The Master of Contemporary Art is designed as a bridge between undergraduate study and independent art practice, focusing on developing an individual professional art practice and understanding its relationship to contemporary art. The first year emphasises experimentation and critical dialogue in an on-campus independent studio environment, while the second year centres on an independent research-led studio project that culminates in assessment and a public exhibition in the annual Masters exhibition. Teaching is delivered through seminars and individual tutorials with support from an assigned Academic Advisor, alongside access to professional opportunities such as intensives, exhibitions and travel.
What you might learn
Students develop an independent, professional contemporary art practice grounded in experimentation, speculation and critical engagement. The course builds the ability to pursue sustained studio-based research, articulate ideas through seminars and tutorials, and refine work through mentorship and peer dialogue. Graduates are prepared to present resolved bodies of work publicly and engage with professional opportunities within the contemporary art sector.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue careers as independent contemporary artists and studio practitioners producing and exhibiting work in professional contexts. The program supports pathways into the broader visual arts ecosystem, including roles connected to exhibitions, project-based practice, and participation in local and international art opportunities. It also provides a foundation for ongoing research and advanced practice development through sustained studio inquiry and public presentation.
Entry requirements
English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. The course is positioned as an intensive graduate program for artists returning to formal study, and as an entry point for artists without formal qualifications who have significant professional experience (including recognised ability where an Honours year has not been undertaken or completed).
