About the course

The Bachelor of Visual Arts combines rigorous scholarship with intensive studio practice in ANU’s School of Art & Design. You build creative and critical capabilities through hands-on making and contextual study, guided by experienced practitioners. Studio options span disciplines such as ceramics, glass, painting, photomedia, printmedia, sculpture/spatial practice and textiles, with opportunities to take electives across ANU.

What you might learn

You develop specialist visual arts skills alongside strong conceptual and critical foundations. The program supports experimentation across studio disciplines, builds understanding of art history and theory, and strengthens research and independent project development through capstone creative research practice courses. You also gain professional practice awareness, preparing you to engage with institutions, communities and the wider cultural sector.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue careers as practicing visual artists or work across the cultural and creative industries. Typical pathways include studio practice, exhibitions and arts projects, roles in galleries and museums, curation support, arts administration and community arts, creative production, and related fields that value visual communication and critical thinking. The degree also provides a foundation for further study in art and design disciplines.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU admission requirements for undergraduate study. Selection is based on an eligible secondary qualification (or equivalent) and satisfaction of any program-specific requirements set by the University. Pathways may be available through adjustment factors and other admission schemes. Prospective students should confirm the relevant category that applies to them via ANU admissions guidance.
