About the course

This one-year honours program provides an intensive pathway for students committed to Pacific Studies to undertake independent research on Pacific-related topics. You’ll draw on specialist expertise across ANU and benefit from strong library and national collection resources. With close supervision and research training in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, the degree builds advanced contextual understanding and prepares graduates for further research study or professional work.

What you might learn

You will develop advanced knowledge of Pacific contexts and sharpen your ability to design and conduct independent research. The program emphasises research training, critical analysis of sources and debates in cognate disciplines, and producing a substantial honours thesis under expert supervision. Graduates strengthen academic writing, project planning, and evidence-based argument skills suited to higher research degrees and research-informed professional roles.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue further study such as a higher research degree, or enter roles where deep Pacific expertise and research capability are valued. Career paths can include policy and program roles in government and international development, research and analysis positions in think tanks or NGOs, community and regional organisations, and cultural or education-related sectors. The honours thesis also supports pathways into academic and applied research careers.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and delegated approval. Requires a Bachelor of Pacific Studies (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, a weighted average mark equivalent to 70% based on the best 36 units in cognate disciplines (excluding 1000-level courses), written support of an identified supervisor, a research proposal, and CAP Honours Committee approval.
