About the course

This one-year honours program provides specialist training in international, internal and transnational security issues affecting the Asia-Pacific. You study within ANU’s strong security studies community, drawing on extensive university and national library resources. The degree includes guided research training and close supervision in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, building advanced capability to analyse contemporary security challenges and their policy implications.

What you might learn

You will develop advanced contextual knowledge of international security, particularly in the Asia-Pacific, and strengthen your ability to undertake independent research. The program focuses on designing and executing an honours thesis project, supported by research training and expert supervision. Graduates build skills in critical analysis, evidence-based argument, research methods, and communicating complex security and policy issues clearly to academic and professional audiences.

Career outcome

Graduates may progress to higher research study (such as a PhD) or move into professional roles where security expertise and research capability are valued. Typical pathways include policy and analyst roles in government and defence-related agencies, intelligence and security organisations, international organisations, NGOs, and think tanks. The honours research experience also supports careers in academia, consulting, and roles involving strategic analysis and regional security assessment.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU program-specific academic/non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and delegated approval. Normally requires a Bachelor of International Security Studies (or equivalent) completed within the last two years, a WAM equivalent to 70% in relevant (non-1000 level) courses, a major in a cognate discipline, an identified supervisor’s written support, a research proposal, and CAP Honours Committee approval.
