About the course

This one-year Honours program builds on prior International Relations study through a research-led curriculum. You develop advanced theoretical and methodological understanding of international relations and undertake a substantial supervised research project, typically a 20,000-word thesis. The degree is designed to strengthen analytical depth and research capability, supporting progression into professional policy-focused roles or further study via higher degree by research.

What you might learn

You will strengthen research principles and methods for political science and international relations, and deepen your grasp of core theoretical concepts. The program develops skills in designing and executing an independent research project, including formulating questions, selecting appropriate methods, analysing evidence and presenting findings in a substantial thesis. It also builds high-level critical thinking, scholarly writing and the ability to address complex global issues rigorously.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-informed work in international and public affairs, including government and diplomacy, policy analysis, defence and security, development and humanitarian organisations, and international NGOs. The Honours thesis experience supports pathways into research assistant and analyst roles, and provides a strong foundation for further academic study such as a higher degree by research and careers requiring advanced analytical and writing capability.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic, non-academic and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and Honours admission depends on supervisory capacity and approval. A minimum requirement is an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of International Relations (ANU or equivalent) completed within the past two years, with a weighted average mark equivalent to 70%, plus written approval from an identified thesis supervisor.
