About the course

This one-year honours program builds on a Health Science bachelor degree and focuses on undertaking an independent, supervised research project. You develop a research question in areas such as biomedical or clinical science, health policy, health economics, sociology of health or population health, then design and implement an appropriate research strategy. The program culminates in an evidence-based written thesis and develops advanced academic and professional research capability.

What you might learn

You will learn to frame a relevant health-science research problem, select suitable quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods, and collect, manage and analyse data reliably. The degree develops skills in critical evaluation of health evidence and initiatives, project planning and management, information literacy, and communicating findings through technical writing and oral presentations. You also learn to integrate results into a coherent, evidence-based argument suitable for a thesis.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles and further study in health and science. Typical pathways include research assistant or junior analyst positions in universities, medical research institutes, government and public health agencies, hospitals and health services, and NGOs. The honours year also strengthens applications for higher research degrees and roles involving evidence evaluation, health policy support, program evaluation, and data-informed decision making across health, biomedical and population health fields.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU admission and English language requirements. Entry is competitive and subject to places, supervisory capacity and approval by the relevant delegated authority. A recognised AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Health Science (or equivalent) completed within the last two years is required, in a cognate discipline, with a weighted average mark equivalent to ANU 70% calculated from the best 36 units in the cognate discipline (excluding 1000-level courses).
