Explore Brisbane under $200

You’ve heard a lot about Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, what about Brisbane? It is the capital city of Queensland, and it has a population of 2.2 million nearly a third of Australia. This city offers a wide variety of budget-friendly activities, many which involves nature and public exhibitions.

Day 1: Koala cuddles

Mount Coot-tha is a popular natural landmark in Brisbane, that offers stunning panoramic views of the city. It is a favorite spot among locals and tourists alike for hiking, picnics, and enjoying the great outdoors.

Tip: Head over to Japanese Garden to take more aesthetic photos.

Brunch walk at Davies Park Market at West End

 

Head to Davies Park Market on a Saturday (the only day they are open). Enjoy a vibrant weekend that features music, fresh produce, sustainable fashion and a wide array of products. This is where Australians often gather in public spaces and engage in social activities that promote connection and social interaction.

The market also reflects Australia’s passion for sustainable living and supporting local businesses.

Don’t forget to look out for the freshly baked croissants and Giant Korean hotdog!

Time for Koala Cuddles

 

Arrive at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary by 12 PM for the wildlife show. You can get up close to view the Australian animals like koalas, kangaroos and wombats. The sanctuary is known for its conservation efforts towards the Australian icon. It is there you get the chance to safely hug a koala, and even meet other Australian wildlife. You could feed kangaroos and wallabies, spot a variety of bird species.

Classic Aussie pub lunch at Fortitude Valley

 

After a 20 minutes drive, you will arrive at a vibrant and dynamic neighborhood. It has a mix of old and new buildings, and a thriving arts and culture scene. Whether you’re in the mood for a modern twist on traditional dishes or something completely new, explore yourself to find out.

Fun fact: Aussies use the term hotel, but they serve pub food. So don’t be intimidated.

Relaxing walk at Kangaroo Point to Captain Burke Park

 

After the hearty meal at Fortitude Valley, take a relaxing stroll to Captain Burke and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

This scenic riverside location offers great photo opportunities of the city skyline and the Story Bridge. If you do come back again, have a picnic or BBQ in the park while enjoying the view.

Day 2: South Bank area

Start the day with a cup of coffee!

 

Make your way to Mailard Project, where you get to experience Australia’s culture of aesthetic cafes with freshly brewed coffee beans made to order for you.

Cost: $ 6.5-10

 

Gather picnic supplies

 

Walk for 6-7 mins and grab some Tim Tams (chocolate wafers) or Super Dupers (ice cream sticks) from Coles or Woolworths

Fun Fact: Coles or Woolworths are the Jaya Grocer or Aeon of Australia.

Mesmerize yourself with the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens

The most iconic landmark of Brisbane. Enjoy the beautiful breeze and greenery with your impromptu picnic.

Fun Fact: It is the second oldest botanic garden in Australia, and also the first on the Brisbane River. Prior to what it is today, it was actually a vegetable garden.

Alternatively, you can also enjoy a scooter ride around the park (approx. 2 km). If picnic is not your cup of tea. It is beginner-friendly as there are no cars around. Simply use the Neuron app to rent one.

Scooter: $11 ($ 0.38 per minute, 30 mins)

Grab a hearty meal at Harajuku Gyoza

 

Hop on to the free ferry service heading to South Bank, it is just beside the Pacific Highway. Walking to the ferry takes about 10-15 minutes.

Fun Fact: Mondays are when they have $1 Gyozas!

If not walk along Grey Street, where you would find other options such as Bourbon Street Bar, Yiros Shop (Greek) or Bamboo Basket (Chinese).

Put on beachwear & grab a cocktail by Brisbane River Pool

 

Beachwear in a swimming pool? Yes! There is a man-made beach combined with the swimming pool in the city, and it is very popular among the locals.

Tip: Visit during the weekdays, it is less crowded!

All in all, Brisbane is filled with adventure and affordable sight-seeing. It is the perfect lifestyle for students as they are able to experience a balanced lifestyle of quality education and a laidback weekend to destress.
