About the course

The Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology)/Doctor of Philosophy program at the University of Melbourne is an accredited pathway that develops advanced clinical psychology expertise alongside original PhD-level research training. It builds comprehensive knowledge of psychopathology, culturally responsive psychological assessment, and evidence-based interventions. Students develop applied capability through supervised training and clinical placements while completing a doctoral thesis that contributes new knowledge to the discipline.

What you might learn

Students learn to assess and treat psychological conditions across the lifespan using evidence-based approaches, with a strong emphasis on cognitive-behavioural therapy and culturally responsive practice. The course aims to develop advanced clinical competencies through structured teaching, individual supervision, and group-based clinical learning. It also aims to build high-level research capability by training students to design and conduct original research culminating in a doctoral thesis.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for advanced practice roles in clinical psychology across settings such as private practice, hospitals, community health services, and government or non-government agencies. The combined clinical and doctoral research training supports careers that integrate specialist clinical work with research, evaluation, and leadership in mental health services. Graduates may also pursue research-focused roles in universities and research organisations, contributing to evidence-based practice and innovation in clinical psychology.

Entry requirements

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in the first year of Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) to be considered. Currently enrolled students can apply to transfer to the combined Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology)/PhD program for the following year. Applications to transfer are opened to currently enrolled Master of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) students towards the end of their first year.
