About the course
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Veterinary Science is a research degree designed to build academic leadership and advanced research capability through independent, supervised study. You will complete a substantial thesis (around 80,000 words) that investigates a defined research problem and contributes original knowledge to the discipline. Research areas include veterinary biosciences, animal health and welfare, and infectious diseases spanning public health and biosecurity, with access to seminars and specialist graduate research support.
What you might learn
Students develop the ability to conceive, design and conduct rigorous original research in veterinary science, demonstrating increasing independence, creativity and innovation. The course aims to build advanced skills in critical analysis, research methodology, scholarly communication and thesis writing. Graduates will be prepared to contribute new knowledge to their field and engage confidently with the broader research community through seminars, workshops and academic supervision.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue careers as veterinary science researchers and academics in universities and research institutes, leading projects that advance animal health, welfare and veterinary public health. The qualification also supports roles in government and industry where high-level research, biosecurity and infectious-disease expertise are valued, including policy and specialist advisory pathways. Depending on the research focus, opportunities may extend to laboratories, public health agencies and animal-health organisations working on zoonoses and biosecurity challenges.
