About the course

The Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering and IT) is a research-focused doctorate that enables candidates to make an original contribution in an engineering or IT discipline at the University of Melbourne. Students undertake a substantial independent research project supported by experienced supervisors and advisory committees, developing deep specialist expertise and demonstrating academic leadership, creativity and innovation. Projects span areas such as biomedical, chemical, civil/infrastructure, electrical/electronic, mechanical and computing/information systems, with opportunities to propose a self-designed research topic.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced research capability to design, conduct and communicate rigorous, original research in engineering and IT fields. The program aims to build independence in scholarly inquiry alongside strong technical and analytical skills, including critical evaluation of literature, methodology development and responsible research practice. Candidates also gain experience collaborating across disciplines and, where relevant, engaging with industry and government-backed research environments.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research and leadership roles in universities, research institutes and R&D-intensive organisations across engineering and technology sectors. Potential pathways include academic researcher/lecturer, research scientist/engineer, and specialist technical roles in areas such as infrastructure, energy, biomedical technologies, advanced manufacturing, computing and data-driven systems. The qualification also supports careers in innovation-focused industry, government agencies and cross-disciplinary roles addressing complex societal and technological challenges.
