About the course

This online professional certificate is designed for those involved in treaty processes as Victoria and other Australian jurisdictions progress treaty negotiations. It builds foundational understanding of treaty-making processes and Australian Indigenous politics, with a practical focus on advancing negotiations between Indigenous Peoples and contemporary settler societies. The course is developed and delivered by the Australian Center at the University of Melbourne.

What you might learn

Students examine key legal frameworks and engage with historical and contemporary research, policies and practices central to treaty-making between Indigenous Peoples and settler-societies. The course aims to develop practical capability to understand, participate in and confidently influence treaty negotiations. It also supports learners to apply this knowledge within government and Indigenous organisational contexts.

Career outcome

Graduates may apply the credential in roles supporting treaty policy, negotiation and implementation across public sector agencies and Indigenous organisations. The course is relevant for public servants across all levels of government and staff in First Nations and Indigenous organisations working on treaty processes. It can support progression into advisory, policy, community engagement and program roles connected to Indigenous affairs and intergovernmental relations.

Entry requirements

Applicants who are not degree holders may obtain entry via completion of four micro-credentials in the Reshaping Australia’s First People-State Relations series (formerly Preparing for Treaty series). English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. Access Melbourne is available.
