About the course

This 72-unit Master of Strategic and Defence Studies develops advanced understanding of strategy, defence policy and security challenges, combining academic rigour with practical application in Australia’s policy capital. You study core concepts and contemporary cases, with options to broaden into related disciplines or complete an independent thesis component. The program is delivered online and is designed for emerging and experienced professionals in strategic and defence fields at Master level in strategic and defence studies.

What you might learn

You will build analytical frameworks to assess strategic competition, deterrence, military operations and regional security dynamics, including Indo-Pacific issues. The degree strengthens practical capabilities such as negotiation, diplomacy, risk and resilience, and policy-relevant research and writing. Students can develop depth through elective streams and specialisations, and may undertake a substantial thesis to demonstrate independent inquiry. This is Master coursework training focused on defence and strategic policy analysis.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for roles where strategic judgement and policy analysis are critical, including defence and national security policy, diplomatic and international policy work, intelligence and strategic assessment, and strategic planning in government or military-related organisations. The program can also support careers in think tanks, international organisations, and corporate defence and security consulting, with skills applicable to risk, crisis and project environments. Outcomes align with Master-level professional practice in strategic and defence studies.
