About the course

The Master of Social Work at the University of Melbourne is a research-led professional degree that develops contemporary social work knowledge and practice using up-to-date evidence and theory. Teaching is delivered through mixed methods including lectures, tutorials, seminars, collaborative learning and practice simulations, supported by purpose-designed interview simulation rooms. The program is nationally accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) and aligned to Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards, providing a portable qualification for work in Australia and internationally.

What you might learn

Students build core professional competence in applying social work theories and methods to complex practice settings, with learning grounded in current research and data. The course develops research capability so graduates can critically use evidence to inform practice and prepare for further research study. It also enables students to pursue specialist interests through a final-semester elective in areas such as mental health, family practice, ageing, disability and violence prevention.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for professional social work roles across the broader human services sector, drawing on accredited training and extensive practical skill development. Career pathways include practice in mental health, child and family services, health and hospital settings, disability services, ageing and aged care, criminal justice and alcohol and other drug services. The internationally portable qualification can support employment opportunities in Australia and overseas in government, community organisations and multidisciplinary service environments.
