About the course

The Master of Social Research Methods develops practical capability to understand social change using data and evidence. Delivered by POLIS within ANU, it focuses on commissioning, conducting and evaluating social research and applying advanced methods to real policy and societal questions. Teaching is informed by active researchers with strong links to government and industry, preparing graduates for specialist roles in social research at master’s level in the social sciences.

What you might learn

Students build core competence in designing and delivering high-quality social research. You’ll strengthen quantitative and qualitative methods, including statistics, survey and population analysis, data collection and research practice, alongside ethics and integrity. The program helps you develop the ability to choose appropriate methods, analyse and interpret social data, and communicate findings for decision-making, giving a master’s-level toolkit for rigorous social science research and evaluation.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue roles that use applied research and evidence to inform policy and organisational decisions. Typical pathways include social researcher, policy analyst, program evaluation officer, survey/data analyst, research consultant, and roles within government agencies, NGOs, think tanks, and private research organisations. The degree also supports progression to further research study for those aiming to deepen methodological expertise, as a master’s qualification in social research and social policy fields.

Entry requirements

Applicants need either a cognate Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5/7, or a Bachelor degree plus a Graduate Certificate/Diploma in a cognate discipline with a minimum GPA of 4/7. Applicants must also satisfy ANU English language admission requirements. Admission is competitive and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee entry.
