About the course

This two-year program prepares graduates for the rapidly emerging quantum technology sector, covering scientific foundations alongside technical, business and societal considerations. It is designed around key quantum applications such as computing, metrology and communications, reflecting strong global investment and industry growth. Students study in person within ANU’s College of Science and Medicine and complete a structured mix of core, integrative and elective coursework.

What you might learn

Students build capability in quantum technology principles and their real-world application, including quantum mechanics, optics, measurement and systems integration. The curriculum develops practical skills through prototyping, special topics, and electives spanning computing, electronics, cryptography, control systems and innovation. Graduates gain the technical breadth and professional context needed to contribute to quantum R&D, product development and the broader ecosystem shaping the “Quantum Age”.

Career outcome

Graduates are suited to roles in the quantum technology industry and related high-tech sectors, including research and development, prototyping, systems integration, and technical consulting. The program also supports pathways into government and defence, finance, and professional services where quantum capability and literacy are increasingly valued. Typical directions include quantum hardware/software teams, measurement and sensing, secure communications, and innovation or project roles in deep-tech ventures.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a recognised Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0, including at least 8 courses in a cognate discipline also meeting a 5.0/7.0 GPA. Admission is competitive and applicants must meet ANU English language requirements. ANU may rank applicants using different GPA calculations and may consider English proficiency and other diversity factors.
