About the course
Deakin’s Master of Science – IFM is a research-focused degree in biological and chemical sciences within the Institute for Frontier Materials. You will work closely with an expert supervisor to define and complete an independent research project and produce a substantial thesis (up to 50,000 words) examined externally. While primarily research-based, the program also includes at least one coursework unit. This is a Master by Research in sciences. The programme deepens scientific methodology, data interpretation, and applied research skills for laboratory and field-based careers.
Career outcome
Graduates are prepared for research and innovation roles linked to biological and chemical sciences and advanced materials, including work in R&D teams, laboratories, and science-led industries. The degree builds capability to plan and conduct independent research, analyse and communicate findings, and contribute new knowledge through a major thesis—useful for progressing to PhD study or research-intensive roles in universities, government agencies, and private sector science organisations. This is a Master by Research in sciences.
