About the course

This advanced master’s degree immerses you in cutting-edge theoretical physics through intensive coursework and a supervised research project. Taught by leading researchers in the ANU Research School of Physics, the program explores foundational frameworks such as quantum field theory and general relativity, while building strong analytical and research capability. It is designed for students aiming to engage with frontier topics and leverage ANU’s research strengths in preparation for research-focused careers.

What you might learn

You will develop advanced theoretical and mathematical tools used in modern physics, including quantum field theory, general relativity and related analytical methods. The program builds skills in problem formulation, modelling, and critical interpretation of complex physical theories, alongside research design and execution through a substantial supervised project. You will strengthen scientific communication and professional practice through selected science-and-society and elective study options.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research pathways in academia, government and industry where advanced modelling and quantitative reasoning are essential. Typical directions include PhD study, research assistant or associate roles in physics or applied mathematics, and positions in national laboratories, space and defence-related organisations, data-intensive technology teams, and scientific computing. The strong theoretical foundation also supports careers in education, science communication and broader STEM roles requiring high-level analysis.

Entry requirements

Entry is based on relevant prior tertiary study in physics or a closely related discipline. Students must be capable of advanced coursework and secure an identified supervisor for the research project component. To remain in the advanced program, students must achieve at least a 70% weighted average mark across the first 48 units of coursework and have supervisor approval confirming the project is feasible and may require on-campus attendance.
