About the course

The Master of Science (Chemistry) deepens advanced chemistry knowledge through a strongly research-focused program embedded within the School of Chemistry or the Bio21 Institute. Students complete a major research project and develop specialist expertise relevant to areas such as molecular analysis, drug discovery, materials science, sustainable energy and nanotechnology. The course also builds professional capability via elective subjects (e.g., science communication, ethics and data skills) and provides access to advanced facilities such as NMR spectroscopy and electron microscopy.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced theoretical and practical chemistry knowledge alongside independent research capability through a substantial research project. The course aims to strengthen analytical, experimental design and problem-solving skills using contemporary laboratory techniques and high-end instrumentation. It also develops professional and transferable skills for scientific practice, including communication, ethical research conduct and working with data.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for chemistry and broader science roles across industries such as renewable energy, nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical research. The research-intensive structure supports pathways into R&D-focused positions, laboratory and analytical science roles, and science/technology organisations where advanced technical expertise is valued. It can also provide preparation for further research training, including progression toward PhD study.
