About the course

This advanced two-year materials science master’s program provides an interdisciplinary foundation in how materials are designed, characterised and applied across technology, health, engineering and environmental challenges. It combines high-level coursework with a substantial research component, culminating in a year-long research-intensive project. The program is designed as a strong pathway to PhD study and emphasises both theoretical understanding and practical research experience.

What you might learn

Students develop rigorous core knowledge in materials science drawing on chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering and biology. The degree builds capability to tackle contemporary problems such as renewable energy materials, advanced batteries, nanomaterials, sensors and sustainable/biocompatible materials. Through advanced coursework, communication and research training, students strengthen analytical thinking, experimental or computational skills, project design and scientific communication to operate effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-focused and technical roles in materials and chemical industries, energy and battery technology, advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology, biomedical and biomaterials, and sustainability-focused sectors. The strong research project component supports careers in R&D laboratories, government and national research organisations, and further doctoral study. Typical pathways include materials scientist, R&D specialist, laboratory/research officer, product development, or scientific/technical consulting roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a relevant bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline with strong academic performance. Progression in the program requires maintaining at least a 70% weighted average mark in the first 48 units and obtaining approval from an identified supervisor for the year-long research project; many projects require on-campus attendance.
