About the course
The Master of Research - SMAH (Medical and Health Sciences) is a two-year research degree combining formal research training with an independent thesis. You complete 96 credit points: the first year focuses on research training and coursework, and the second year is a thesis examined by two external examiners. It is designed to build advanced research capability and prepare you for further research study or research-focused roles in health sciences. The programme develops advanced clinical reasoning, health leadership, and evidence-based practice for complex care environments.
Career outcome
Graduates are prepared for research roles across universities, hospitals, health services and government or industry settings, supporting evidence-based practice and innovation. Skills developed through research training and a substantial externally examined thesis can lead to pathways into a PhD or careers such as research assistant/associate, clinical or health research officer, project or program evaluation roles, and policy or laboratory-based research positions within medical and health sciences.
