About the course

The Master of Philosophy – MDHS (Population and Global Health) is an internationally recognised masters by research degree delivered through the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health. Students undertake independent, sustained research under expert supervision and produce a thesis demonstrating critical understanding and an original contribution to scholarship. Research areas can include health equity and access, data science and health metrics, screening and early detection, and prevention and management of non-communicable diseases and mental health promotion.

What you might learn

The course aims to develop advanced research capability in population and global health, enabling students to design, conduct and manage an independent research project. Students build skills in critical analysis, research methods and scholarly communication through the production of a substantial thesis. Graduates gain the capacity to contribute new knowledge to complex public and global health challenges through rigorous research.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue research-focused careers in universities, medical research institutes, and public health agencies, applying advanced skills in population and global health investigation. The degree can support pathways into roles such as research officer/associate, epidemiology or health metrics analyst, and program or policy evaluation roles in government and non-government organisations. It also provides preparation for further research training, including progression toward doctoral study where appropriate.

Entry requirements

To be considered for entry, you must have completed: a four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of (University of Melbourne) 75% or higher; or a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of (University of Melbourne) 75% or higher. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
