About the course

This Master of Philosophy (Civil Engineering) is a higher degree by research designed to extend your knowledge beyond honours or postgraduate diploma level through an independently researched thesis. You’ll work under supervision, with research comprising the majority of your study, and may complete limited coursework if required. The thesis is examined as an original contribution demonstrating your ability to design and complete independent research in civil engineering.

What you might learn

You’ll develop advanced theoretical mastery and critical reflection, and learn to investigate and synthesise complex concepts and problems. You’ll generate and evaluate ideas at an abstract level, design and apply appropriate research methods, and communicate research plans and findings to peers and the wider community. You’ll also undertake research that contributes original knowledge and/or professional practice in your discipline.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for research-focused roles in consulting, construction and infrastructure, water and transport agencies, and government or industry R&D settings.
