About the course
The Master of Pacific Studies provides research-led, transdisciplinary study of Oceania, drawing on ANU expertise in Pacific Studies. You examine the region’s diversity and complexity through historical and contemporary lenses, with emphasis on Indigenous Pacific voices, knowledges and methodologies. Coursework spans culture, arts, linguistics, politics, security, development and research methods, with electives tailored to your interests in Pacific-focused topics.
What you might learn
You will develop a strong grounding in key debates shaping Oceania and build skills to analyse Pacific histories, cultures and contemporary regional dynamics. The program aims to strengthen your ability to apply inclusive and critical research methodologies, evaluate policy and development challenges, and communicate nuanced perspectives across disciplines. You can broaden capability through electives such as diplomacy, geopolitics, gender, law and sustainable development in Pacific contexts.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue roles with government agencies, international organisations, NGOs, development and humanitarian bodies, diplomacy and foreign affairs, policy and research institutes, and community or cultural organisations working with Pacific communities. The degree supports careers involving regional analysis, program and policy work, stakeholder engagement and research. It can also provide preparation for further study or research focused on Pacific Studies in the humanities and social sciences.
Entry requirements
Applicants must meet ANU English language requirements and satisfy one pathway: a cognate Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with minimum GPA 5/7; or Bachelor with GPA 4/7 plus a Graduate Certificate (GPA 4/7) or 3 years relevant ANZSCO skill level 1 experience; or a cognate Graduate Certificate (GPA 4/7) plus 3 years experience; or a cognate Graduate Diploma (GPA 4/7); or 10 years relevant experience. Entry is competitive.
