About the course

The Master of Museum and Heritage Studies leverages ANU’s links with Canberra’s major cultural and collecting institutions to prepare graduates for contemporary museum and heritage practice. You will engage with leading researchers and sector professionals and can gain practical experience through an internship option. The program examines key debates shaping museums and heritage today, including inclusion, repatriation, Indigenous curation, visitor studies, and policy. This is a master’s degree in museum and heritage studies.

What you might learn

Students develop contemporary curatorship, collections management, and cultural heritage management capabilities alongside critical perspectives on museums and heritage as social and political practices. The program builds skills in analysing heritage policy and professional practice, addressing ethical issues such as restitution and Indigenous cultural authority, and designing research- and evidence-informed approaches to exhibitions and visitor engagement. Graduates gain advanced understanding suited to professional practice in museum and heritage studies at master’s level.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for professional roles across museums, galleries, archives, libraries, heritage organisations, government agencies, and Indigenous cultural organisations. Typical pathways include curator or assistant curator, collections or registration officer, heritage adviser, policy or program officer, community engagement roles, and research/project positions supporting exhibitions, restitution work, or heritage management initiatives. The degree also supports progression to further study or sector-specialist roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet ANU academic/non-academic and English language requirements and are selected competitively. Entry typically requires a cognate bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least GPA 5/7; or GPA 4/7 with either a relevant graduate certificate (min GPA 4/7) or at least 3 years full-time equivalent relevant professional experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1. Alternatives include a cognate graduate certificate/diploma with GPA 4/7 and experience, or 10 years relevant experience.
