About the course

The Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) is an AQF Level 9 Extended, four-year graduate program designed for pre-registration as a junior doctor. It emphasises compassionate, ethical patient care alongside the advancement of medical knowledge. The curriculum is organised around medical sciences, clinical skills, population health, and professionalism and leadership, with explicit focus on Indigenous health and experience in rural and remote Australian healthcare settings.

What you might learn

Students develop a strong foundation in contemporary medical sciences and apply it through progressively complex clinical learning. The program builds communication and patient examination skills, critical appraisal and evidence-based decision-making, and an understanding of how social, environmental and population factors shape health outcomes. It also develops professionalism, ethical practice, teamwork and leadership capabilities, including cultural safety and insight into Indigenous health contexts and rural/remote care.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for pre-registration work as junior doctors and progression into medical practice and specialist training pathways. The degree supports careers across hospital and community healthcare settings, including clinical roles in metropolitan, rural and remote environments. Training in population health, professionalism and leadership also equips graduates to contribute to health service improvement, quality and safety initiatives, and research-informed practice within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be completing or have completed an AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree or AQF Level 8 Bachelor Honours degree and meet ANU English language requirements. Selection is competitive and based on a weighted GPA (25%), GAMSAT or (international only) MCAT score (25%), and an interview (50%). Minimum weighted GPA for interview consideration is 5.0; GAMSAT minimum overall 50 with 50 in each section, or MCAT 125 in each section.
