About the course

This advanced master’s degree develops high-level capability in mathematical sciences through a combination of rigorous coursework and a substantial research project. You can tailor study across pure and applied mathematics, modelling and computation, with opportunities to draw on related quantitative areas such as statistics, computer science, econometrics and financial mathematics. The program is designed for students aiming for deeper specialist expertise and research-led learning.

What you might learn

You will strengthen advanced mathematical reasoning, problem solving and proof skills while building competence in applied and computational techniques. The degree develops the ability to formulate models, analyse complex systems, and use modern mathematical tools across diverse domains. Through a supervised research project, you gain experience defining a research question, applying appropriate methods, interpreting results, and communicating findings clearly to specialist audiences.

Career outcome

Graduates are prepared for mathematically intensive careers across industry, government and research. Typical pathways include roles in data and quantitative analysis, mathematical and statistical modelling, scientific computing, finance and risk, operations research, and research assistant or junior research roles. The research component also provides preparation for further study such as a PhD, particularly for students targeting academic or research-focused careers.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.5/7.0. They must also have completed at least 8 courses in a cognate discipline, with a minimum GPA of 5.5/7.0 in those cognate courses. Progression to the research component requires a minimum 70% weighted average mark in the first 48 units and approval from an identified supervisor.
