About the course

The Melbourne Juris Doctor (JD) is a graduate law degree designed to prepare students for entry to the legal profession and to set a benchmark for legal education in Australia. It combines an intellectually challenging curriculum with practical learning delivered in seminar-style, on-campus classes. Students also have access to co-curricular opportunities such as clinics, internships, mooting and competitions, and international exchanges.

What you might learn

Students develop foundational and advanced legal knowledge alongside practical skills for professional legal work, including research, analysis, advocacy and problem-solving. The course aims to prepare graduates to be career-ready for diverse legal and law-related pathways through expert teaching and skills support. It also builds professional networks through a cohort-based learning experience and opportunities beyond the classroom.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue admission to legal practice and work as lawyers across a wide range of areas and settings. The degree also supports careers in business, government and community organisations where legal expertise and critical reasoning are valued. Professional experience and competitions help students explore specialties and strengthen employability for law and law-adjacent roles.

You can apply if you already have an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than law, will complete an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than law in the year you apply, or if you have a law degree from an overseas jurisdiction.
