About the course

This two-year program builds specialist capability in international law and contemporary diplomacy, preparing graduates to represent governments or organisations in global settings. Taught jointly by ANU Law School and the Coral Bell School, it combines legal and policy perspectives with input from experienced practitioners. Students gain a deep understanding of how law and diplomacy interact in modern international affairs and join a strong network of scholars and policy-makers.

What you might learn

Students develop advanced knowledge of the international legal system and diplomatic practice, including negotiation, conflict resolution, legal reasoning and policy analysis. The program strengthens skills in research, persuasive writing and professional communication for multilateral and cross-cultural contexts. Through a structured mix of compulsory and elective courses, students learn to evaluate complex international problems, apply legal frameworks, and design practical diplomatic or legal responses.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue roles across government and international engagement, including foreign affairs, defence policy, international development and multilateral diplomacy. The degree also supports careers in international legal practice, policy advisory and advocacy work in NGOs and intergovernmental organisations. Typical pathways include diplomat/foreign service officer, international policy analyst, treaty or compliance adviser, legal or governance consultant, and roles supporting international negotiations and disputes.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet one of several pathways, typically a Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with GPA 5/7, or GPA 4/7 with either 3 years relevant skilled work experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1), a relevant Graduate Certificate/Diploma, or 48 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7. GRE may be accepted with minimum scores (155 Verbal, 155 Quantitative, 4.0 Writing) plus experience. English language requirements also apply and admission is competitive.
