About the course

This program builds advanced capability in international law and contemporary diplomacy for professionals working in global policy and legal environments. It explores how legal frameworks and diplomatic practice interact in today’s international system and develops practical, career-focused expertise. Teaching draws on ANU Law School and Asia-Pacific affairs specialists alongside experienced practitioners. This is a master’s degree in international law and diplomacy.

What you might learn

You will develop specialist knowledge of core international law principles and the institutions that shape global governance, alongside practical diplomatic skills such as negotiation, conflict resolution and policy analysis. The program strengthens research and legal writing capability and allows you to tailor study through electives across diplomacy, international relations and international law. It is designed to prepare graduates for advanced professional practice in law and diplomacy.

Career outcome

Graduates may pursue roles in foreign affairs and trade, diplomatic missions, international organisations, government policy agencies, NGOs and humanitarian or development bodies. The degree can also support careers in international legal practice, compliance and advisory work in global-facing organisations, as well as research and policy-focused roles. Outcomes align with professional work requiring cross-border legal and diplomatic expertise. This is a master’s qualification in international law and diplomacy.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least GPA 5/7, or GPA 4/7 plus either 3 years relevant ANZSCO skill level 1 work experience, or a relevant graduate certificate/diploma (GPA 4/7), or 48 postgraduate units with GPA 4/7. GRE may be accepted (155 Verbal, 155 Quant, 4.0 Writing) with relevant experience. English language requirements also apply; admission is competitive.
