About the course
The Master of Intellectual Property Law provides specialised training across the spectrum of intellectual property protection regimes as part of the Melbourne Law Masters program. Designed for both law and non-law graduates, it combines practical and rigorous subjects covering Australian and New Zealand IP law in a global context. Subjects are delivered flexibly (often in intensive formats) and may be taught online, on campus, or via hybrid delivery.
What you might learn
Students develop advanced knowledge of intellectual property law and how IP regimes operate in professional and industry settings. The course aims to build practical capability to analyse, manage and advise on IP protection strategies, disputes and regulatory frameworks. It also supports professional development for those seeking to broaden or deepen IP expertise, including pathways aligned to patent and trade marks attorney accreditation (subject to eligibility and subject selection).
Career outcome
Graduates can pursue careers in intellectual property practice and related legal and advisory roles across law firms, government and industry. The program supports pathways toward patent attorney and/or trade marks attorney accreditation in Australia and New Zealand for eligible candidates (typically existing lawyers, depending on subject choices). Career directions include IP lawyer, trade marks professional, IP policy or compliance roles, and IP-focused positions in technology, creative industries, research and commercialisation.
