About the course

ANU’s Master of Environment (Advanced) is a two-year degree combining advanced coursework with a substantial research component. You study contemporary environmental challenges and approaches, then build depth in a chosen area such as conservation, climate, policy, sustainability, or water management. The advanced stream includes up to a year of supervised research culminating in a thesis, preparing you for complex professional and research-focused work in environmental science.

What you might learn

You will develop the ability to analyse complex environment–society problems using interdisciplinary perspectives, policy and systems thinking. The program builds skills in research design and methods, environmental measurement/modelling, and applied tools such as GIS and impact assessment. Through a supervised dissertation, you learn to frame feasible research questions, work with evidence and data, and communicate findings clearly—core capabilities for a Masters-level environmental science specialist.

Career outcome

Graduates may work in government agencies, consultancies, NGOs, and industry roles focused on environmental management, policy and planning, sustainability strategy, conservation, climate adaptation, or water and natural resource management. The substantial thesis and research training also support progression to research assistant roles or further research study. This Masters-level qualification is suited to careers requiring advanced analytical and research capability in environmental science.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 5.5 out of 7.0. Applicants must also meet ANU English language requirements and any program-specific academic/non-academic requirements. Admission is competitive, so meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer; ANU may rank applicants using calculated GPAs across earlier semesters of the qualifying degree.
