About the course

This advanced master’s program examines how humanities research intersects with digital technologies. You explore critical, ethical and methodological questions around topics such as algorithmic bias and creativity, digital archives and social justice, data ontologies and sharing, and online cultural heritage collections. The degree provides strong grounding in theory and digital methods while allowing you to tailor applications and specialisms and undertake a substantial independent research project.

What you might learn

You will build capability in digital humanities research design, combining humanities perspectives with computational and digital approaches. Learning emphasises critical and theoretical frameworks, ethical application of digital methods, and practical use of tools for analysing, curating and interpreting cultural and social data. Through research training and experience courses and a thesis, you develop skills in project planning, methodology selection, and producing independent, original research with supervision.

Career outcome

Graduates can pursue roles where digital methods support humanities, cultural and public-facing work. Opportunities include digital humanities and research roles in universities, cultural heritage and GLAM organisations (galleries, libraries, archives and museums), digital archiving and collections, research and data roles in government and policy, and cultural analytics or digital content strategy. Skills also suit consultancy and project-based work involving digital platforms, heritage digitisation and ethically informed technology use.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet one pathway: (1) cognate Bachelor degree (or equivalent) with minimum GPA 6/7 plus approval of an identified supervisor for the research project/thesis; or (2) Bachelor degree plus Graduate Certificate/Diploma in a cognate discipline with minimum GPA 5/7 plus supervisor approval; or (3) cognate Bachelor with GPA 5/7 plus 3 years relevant full-time work experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 1) plus supervisor approval.
