About the course
The Bachelor of Music provides advanced training across a variety of musical disciplines through an immersive and practical curriculum that combines music core studies, electives and breadth subjects. Students can specialise through majors including Jazz & Improvisation, building technical capability alongside creative practice and performance experience. The Jazz & Improvisation major emphasises individual, small-group and large-group performance and draws on diverse traditions including Australian Indigenous, non-Western, European and African-American jazz.
What you might learn
Students develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the practical, theoretical and conceptual aspects of music while broadening musical knowledge across a range of styles and repertoire. The course builds advanced critical thinking and creative problem-solving through regular practical activities, performance work and theoretical studies. It also supports professional development through opportunities for solo and ensemble performances and broader career-relevant experiences.
Career outcome
Graduates may pursue work as performing musicians and creative practitioners across jazz and improvised music contexts, supported by extensive ensemble and studio-based training. The program also prepares students for roles in music-related industries such as composition and related creative production pathways. Graduates may also continue to an Honours year as a pathway into advanced graduate study in music.
